ACY Conducts Youth Leadership Tour
Martin County’s leaders of tomorrow were recently treated to a tour of the American Custom Yachts (ACY) facility in Stuart as part of the Martin County LEADERship Program coordinated by the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, the Business Development Board of Martin County and area high schools.
The tour was conducted by Chris Shultz, director of ACY’s marketing division AMG Creative. Shultz led the students through the yard explaining the variety of marine services offered at ACY’s 63-acre facility located on the Okeechobee Waterway. Students experienced first-hand the construction of ACY’s new 90 custom sportfisherman, as well as a wide range of work underway by the carpentry, painting, mechanical and haul-out crews. Shultz emphasized the unique histories that surround many of the vessels visiting the yard and pointed out yachts belonging to ACY’s world-renowned sportfishing fleet. He discussed the variety of highly skilled jobs provided by the marine industry and related fields, from mechanical and electrical engineering to composite technology, marine electronics, management, marketing and naval architecture. Shultz stressed the importance of vocational training to learn vital trades such as welding, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and electrical services, explaining that there is an overabundance of trade jobs available in the marine industry that cannot be filled by a skilled workforce. Shultz also touched on new job opportunities that will be opening up over the next several years at American Energy Innovations, an affiliate of ACY that manufactures wind and water turbine blades.
At the tour’s conclusion, Shultz fielded questions and gave each student a copy of the ACY company newsletter American Patriot Press, providing in-depth company news and further details into the many projects underway at the yard. The students left with a much greater understanding of the marine industry as a driving force in the economy of Martin County.
Going on its 15th year, the Martin County LEADERship Program provides an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors throughout Martin County to develop and enhance their leadership skills. Typically, 35 students are selected each year to participate in the comprehensive nine-month program where they learn about their community’s history, government, business, arts and culture, criminal justice and environment.
